Shiatsu Massage Therapy

Shiatsu is a physical therapy that supports and strengthens the body’s natural ability to heal and balance itself. It works on the whole person, not just with the physical body, but also with the psychological, emotional and spiritual aspects of being.

Shiatsu originated in Japan from traditional Chinese medicine, with influences from more recent Western therapies. Although shiatsu means ‘finger pressure’ in Japanese, in practice a practitioner uses touch, comfortable pressure and manipulative techniques to adjust the body’s physical structure and balance its energy flow. It is a deeply relaxing experience and regular treatments can alleviate stress and illness and maintain health and well-being.

Alignment takes place at physical, emotional, mental & spiritual levels

Shiatsu treatments are appropriate for children, adults, and the elderly.  Almost anyone can benefit from shiatsu, and we have extensive experience working with an array of conditions and limitations that people may have.  I also have experience helping clients feel safe and secure regardless of their beliefs or scepticism regarding hands on bodywork.

In my treatments I combine 3 type of Shiatsu style according to the client needs;

Five Element Shiatsu

Five Element Shiatsu uses the paradigm of the Five Elements or Five Phase theory and the four pillars of examination to identify patterns of disharmony in the client’s body-mind-spirit and to balance those patterns through an appropriate treatment. The intention of the Five Element Shiatsu style is to address all aspects of the client, and considerations of the client’s physical symptoms, lifestyle, emotional, and psychological factors are all considered important. Assessment of the client is through detailed verbal history along with abdominal and back palpation and assessment of the pulse. Five Element Shiatsu is effective in both acute and chronic problems and its real strength is working on constitutional issues.

Zen Shiatsu

Zen Shiatsu is the popular name for this style, developed by Shizuto Masunaga (1925-1981) – he named his style IOKAI (King) Shiatsu.  He believed Shiatsu was the King of bodywork, with its deep, comfortable penetration, its balancing and detoxifying effects and its theory, developed alongside that of acupuncture and herbal medicine.  The Western publishers of his 1977 book, renamed it Zen.  Zen Shiatsu goes directly to the core of the receiver’s present condition via its subtle diagnostic system. The use of a stationary, “listening” hand guiding the penetrating, working hand makes for great sensitivity and effectiveness. It has influenced many other styles.

Shiatsu Shin Tai

Shin Tai is an innovative evolution of shiatsu that was developed by Saul Goodman. Shiatsu Shin Tai expands on traditional Shiatsu massage to create an evolutionary system of diagnosis and technique that stimulates the flow of life force in the body. There is a focus on the treatment of the two primary meridians, Governing Vessel and Conception Vessel, creating a powerful system of diagnosis, theory and technique that facilitates deep transformation. A unique synthesis of structural, fascia, meridian, and chakra technique, this therapeutic bodywork clears stress from the body, and naturally stimulates the flow of energy.

“Molecules do not have to touch each other to interact. Energy can flow through … the electromagnetic field … The electromagnetic field along with water forms the matrix of life.” Szent-Györgyi 1957

What can you expect during a treatment?

During a shiatsu treatment, receivers lie on a futon while remaining fully clothed.  Often they will spend part of the treatment laying face down and another part laying face up or on one side; the practitioner will always work with you to keep you comfortable.

Conversation is not the focus during a treatment.  This allows both the practitioner and the receiver to experience any sensations during the session as deeply as possible; this increases the effectiveness of the session. Sometimes the practitioner will leave the treatment room for a short period if the receiver’s body is making an adjustment/alignment on its own, but the focus remains with the receiver and their process.

What are the benefits of receiving treatments?

Shiatsu treatments bring you through a process of releasing layers of stress and compression.  Life force that has been locked up in these stress systems is liberated and recycled back into very deep layers of your body.  We utilise many techniques to help free your body from stress.  Some of the techniques are very deep touch, some are very light touch, but all are used to free stress patterns so that more space and motion are introduced back into your system.

When you receive a Shiatsu treatment, you begin to literally vibrate more in the present moment.  You will have a greater capacity to “be in the NOW,” because your body is free of matrixes that were holding you fixed in stress patterns that are no longer actually operating.  Some of the benefits of this process are:

  • more energy & vitality
  • pain relief:  back, headache, neck, shoulder, knee, etc.
  • improved digestive and glandular function
  • reproductive health and fertility;  prostrate health
  • enhanced immune function
  • regulation of menstrual cycle
  • alleviate depression and anxiety
  • return of enthusiasm for life
  • increased creativity
  • enhanced spiritual development and consciousness
  • better relationships to family, friends and partner

Shiatsu restores the natural resonance of the body by recovering proper special relationships and motion at the cellular, organ, joint, and vibrational levels. This helps to recover lost life force and the individual’s will to be active and to heal his or her self. The regenerative mechanisms of the body are activated during the treatment process.

The treatment is finished when the receiver reaches the maximum ease that they can during that session.  If it is a private session, this could be from 50 minutes to 75 minutes, depending on the needs of the client.
